Early Career Professional of the Year Winner – Luke Donnelly

This accolade celebrates the exceptional talent shaping the future of decommissioning. At just 26 years old, Luke Donnelly has demonstrated technical leadership and innovation on one of the UK’s most complex projects—the dismantling of the Brent Charlie topside (31,000 tonnes).

    Delivered Shell’s Brent Decommissioning Project with an industry-leading 98.5% recycling rate across 95,000 tonnes of topsides, zero cost overruns, and minimal environmental impact.

    Constructed Quay 6, Europe’s heaviest-duty quay (45t/m²), enabling reception of 60,000-tonne structures. Pioneered “load-in by skidding” for the 31,000-tonne Brent Charlie topside—a global first.

    Partnered with Shell and Allseas to co-design solutions, share lessons, and raise industry standards.

The Decom Mission Awards are an annual, prestigious event in the energy industry, that recognises and celebrates excellence, innovation, and safety in decommissioning. Established to highlight achievements across the global decommissioning sector, these awards are presented during Decom Week. The celebration recognises outstanding achievements in a demanding, fast‑moving industry while driving progress through innovative, efficient, and sustainable practices. It highlights the sector’s commitment to the circular economy, responsible waste management, decarbonisation, and a strong safety culture. The awards also support talent development for the next generation of professionals and provide a global platform for Decom Mission members to showcase their capabilities.

Emerging Professional in Decommissioning Winner – Luke Donnelly

ABLE is extremely proud that Luke Donnelly, Decommissioning Manager, has been named the winner of the Emerging Professional in Decommissioning Award at the Decom Mission Awards. This prestigious accolade recognises outstanding young talent making significant contributions to the decommissioning industry.

Luke’s journey with ABLE began in 2017 when he joined the company straight out of college as an Apprentice Engineer. Now just 25 years old, Luke has rapidly risen through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional technical skill, leadership, and a deep commitment to innovation and sustainability in decommissioning.

Throughout his career, Luke has played a pivotal role in several high-profile projects, including the dismantling and recycling of major oil and gas structures such as the Shell Brent Decommissioning Project. His work has not only advanced ABLE’s capabilities but has also set new benchmarks for safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility across the sector.

Luke’s dedication, ingenuity, and passion for the industry is inspiring, he embodies the future of decommissioning and recycling, and we are incredibly proud to see his hard work and talent recognised on such a prominent stage.

Luke’s award is a testament to the strength of ABLE’s apprenticeship and development programmes, and to the bright future of the decommissioning and recycling industries driven by emerging professionals like him.

ABLE’s Commercial Director Mark Ellis received the award on Luke’s behalf thanking Decomm Mission and the Shell support throughout the Brent Field Decommissioning programme that has ran in parallel to Luke’s impressive journey.

Their goals include celebrating the industry’s growth, innovation, and resilience, and highlighting the contributions of organisations and individuals who strengthen the supply chain, improve health and safety, and push the sector toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

Made It Happen Champion Finalist – Peter Stephenson

ABLE’s Executive Chairman, Peter Stephenson, is a named finalist for the Made It Happen Champion award at the RenewableUK Global Offshore Wind Awards - an honour that recognises individuals who have played a pivotal role in advancing the UK’s clean energy revolution.

The award celebrates senior leaders who bring clarity to complex challenges, drive strategic progress, and deliver tangible results across the offshore wind sector. The event, shone a spotlight on the achievements driving the offshore wind sector forward - recognising the people, projects, and priorities shaping the future of clean energy.

Peter’s nomination reflects a lifetime of transformative infrastructure delivery. As the founder of Able UK, he has not only pioneered marine recycling but also created the backbone of the UK’s offshore wind deployment capabilities. His vision led to the development of Able Seaton Port (ASP) - now the UK’s most experienced offshore wind marshalling yard - and the forthcoming Able Humber Port (AHP), which will be the country’s first co-located manufacturing and installation hub.
