ABLE Featured in Institute of Demolition Engineers 50th Anniversary Yearbook

ABLE is proud to be featured in the Institute of Demolition Engineers' (IDE) 50th Anniversary Yearbook, a landmark publication celebrating five decades of innovation, expertise and professional excellence across the demolition industry.

The article, titled "Dismantling at Scale", was authored by ABLE UK's Decommissioning Manager, Luke Donnelly, and provides an insight into the specialist discipline of offshore decommissioning, an industry in which ABLE has established itself as a recognised global leader.

Drawing on ABLE's extensive experience in the dismantling and recycling of offshore structures, the article explores the significant technical, environmental and logistical challenges involved in delivering major decommissioning projects. From the initial planning and stakeholder engagement stages through to the final processing and recycling of materials, offshore decommissioning demands a multidisciplinary approach that combines engineering expertise, rigorous safety management and environmental responsibility.

The feature reflects on how the industry has evolved over recent decades as ageing offshore oil and gas infrastructure reaches the end of its operational life. With hundreds of offshore structures expected to be decommissioned across the North Sea and beyond in the coming years, the sector continues to play an increasingly important role in supporting the energy industry's transition whilst ensuring legacy assets are responsibly dismantled and recycled.

ABLE Seaton Port has been at the forefront of this sector for more than four decades, developing the facilities, expertise and infrastructure required to handle some of the world's largest and most complex offshore decommissioning projects. The company's purpose-built facilities on the River Tees have received and dismantled numerous offshore structures, including some of the most significant assets ever brought ashore for decommissioning. As ABLE marks its 60th anniversary this year, the feature serves as a timely reflection of the company's longstanding commitment to innovation, engineering excellence and leadership within the marine decommissioning sector.

Luke's article highlights the importance of detailed planning, collaboration and innovation throughout the decommissioning process. Every project requires careful consideration of structural engineering, hazardous materials management, transportation logistics, waste hierarchy principles and environmental compliance. The ultimate objective is not simply to dismantle structures safely, but to maximise the recovery and reuse of valuable materials, supporting circular economy principles and reducing environmental impact wherever possible.

The article also examines the role that lessons learned, knowledge sharing and technological advancement continue to play within the demolition and decommissioning industries. As projects become increasingly complex, the industry must continue to evolve, adopting new methodologies and sharing best practice to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability.

ABLE UK is delighted to contribute to this milestone publication and to support the IDE as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. We would also like to congratulate Luke on producing an insightful article that showcases both the importance of offshore decommissioning and the expertise that exists within ABLE's team.

We extend our thanks to the Institute of Demolition Engineers for the opportunity to participate in this special publication and look forward to supporting the continued development of the demolition and decommissioning sectors for many years to come.
